Tucson is an ideal budget-friendly destination because of its comfortable temperature and variety of low-cost activities. From hiking trails and museums to nightlife activities and great food, Tucson is an amazing winter destination for a $1,000 budget. If you want to visit bigger cities, Scottsdale and Phoenix are nearby for day trips.

“Tucson is a good choice if you want to spend time outdoors in winter but aren’t looking for a beach trip,” said Andrés Serra, head of pperations at Optimise Travel. “December highs are usually around 66°F, so walking and hiking are much more comfortable than in the summer. I suggest spending a day in Saguaro National Park, which has about 180 miles of trails. A $25 vehicle pass lets you visit both park districts for seven days.”

Mexico City’s weather stays in the mid-70s throughout the winter, which is why it makes our budget-friendly getaway list. Mexico City immerses you in a new culture with world-class street food, neighborhood markets and unique lodging. To avoid tourism, January and February are usually the best winter travel months.

“Flights from most U.S. hubs to Mexico City run under $300 round trip, and $60 to 80 a night gets you a comfortable stay in Roma or Condesa,” said Joe Cronin, President of International Citizens Insurance. The winter months bring mild, dry weather in the 70s, and the food scene alone justifies the trip.

Mobile is an affordable Gulf Coast destination. Lodging, dining and attractions are all reasonably priced. Mobile is the birthplace of Mardi Gras, so it has dozens of historic sights and free local spots to visit. If you’re looking to escape the cold, check out this underrated Southern city.

“Mobile offers Gulf Coast food, historic neighborhoods, and over 300 years of local history,” Serra said. “The city hosted organized Mardi Gras festivities as early as 1703, well before New Orleans became famous for the celebration.”

Winter travel doesn’t always mean you’re trying to escape the cold. Washington Valley is an ideal East Coast ski destination. With seven downhill ski resorts and six cross-country ski networks, Washington Valley might be your dream, budget-friendly winter destination.

“The trend we are seeing this year is that people are looking for value,” said Chris Proulx, executive director for the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce. Mount Washington Valley provides amazing value and variety at the same time. Being only 2.5 hours away from Boston and four to five hours from New York, you can drive instead fly with its higher costs. Once you are here, you have so much at your fingertips. You get a lot for your vacation dollars.
