3 Walmart Generic Buys That Save Big Money Over Name Brand

Two of Walmart's house brands, Equate and Great Value, are known for their low prices, and have their fans, who compare the products to more recognizable brand names for both savings and quality.



However, not every Walmart-brand item saves you the same percentage over its private-label counterpart. In some cases, the difference between the store brand's price and the name brand is significant.

Here are the Walmart house-brand buys that will save you more money than usual.

  • Price: $1.98

  • Savings: $9

A 100-count bottle of 200-milligram Equate Ibuprofen Tablets is just under $2 at Walmart, which equals about $0.02 each. To compare, a 100-count bottle of 200-milligram Advil coated tablets is $10.98, or about $0.11 each.

  • Price: $20.88

  • Savings: $107.35

A 300-count value pack of Equate Cetirizine Hydrochloride Tablets — Walmart's version of Zyrtec — is only $20.88, or $0.07 per tablet. Zyrtec doesn't sell that large of a quantity at Walmart. A 90-count bottle of Zyrtec tablets costs $39.97, around $0.44 each — almost five times as much as the Equate brand. If you bought enough Zyrtec to equal one bottle of Equate, you'd spend $133.23.of the Walmart brand.

  • Price: $1.87

  • Savings: $1.89

Great Value Honey Wheat Bread lives up to the brand name "Great Value" at about $0.09 per ounce. Nature's Own Honey Wheat Sandwich Bread is just a hair more than twice the price at $3.76, almost $0.19 per ounce. You could buy two loves of the Walmart bread for that price.
