5 Under-the-Radar Travel Destinations That Can Save You Hundreds of Dollars

Taking a trip to Las Vegas, Paris, London, the sunny Caribbean, or any number of high-profile destination hot-spots is certainly on the list of any travel bug – but what about the lesser-known destinations that might not only inspire those with a love of discovering new places and cultures, but also save you a bundle at the same time?

Speaking to a variety of travel experts on this very subject, it quickly becomes clear that serious globetrotters might be missing out on some true hidden gems. Let’s take a look.

Portugal has been making travel headlines for some time now, especially whenever affordability is mentioned within the decision-making rubric. But beyond Lisbon, Porto, and Lagos lies another option which – according to travel expert André Ribeiro, founder of Andre On Digital – affords travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience at a significant savings.

“Figueira offers the kind of variety many travelers expect from better-known Portuguese beach destinations: A huge beach, a walkable waterfront, seafood restaurants, surfing, summer events and nightlife. Travelers can also explore Buarcos, hike in Serra da Boa Viagem and visit Cabo Mondego. Many of these activities, including the beach, promenade and hiking trails, are free,” Ribeiro said, noting that June and early September bookings could see even deeper discounting.

Ribeiro suggested that, when compared to stays in Lagos or Albufeira, travelers could expect to save approximately $500 on four nights of accommodation.

The Atlantic provinces of Canada have a reputation for rugged, gorgeous coastlines while also playing host to the nation’s friendliest folk – and Cape Breton Island, to the northeast of mainland Nova Scotia, exemplifies both of these qualities.

“It’s also a destination where some of the best experiences won’t break the bank. A seven-day pass for Cape Breton Highlands National Park costs just $17.50. Accommodation ranges from campgrounds and inns to hotels and vacation rentals, making it easy to tailor a trip to your budget. For U.S. travelers, roundtrip flights to nearby Sydney can also sometimes be found for under $1,000,” suggested Travelzoo publisher Dean Seguin.

Seguin also endorsed taking in the beauty of the Cabot Trail, a scenic 185-mile drive best enjoyed in the late summer or fall, while enjoying the island’s signature seafood fare and Celtic fiddle performances.

Japan has captivated the imagination of many an intrepid traveler, and there’s no better time than now to explore the Land of the Rising Sun. According to writer and veteran traveler Kirill Oleshkevich of Penta Entertainment, Nagoya in particular is attractive – even though often overshadowed by bigger cities such as Tokyo and Kyoto.

“Visitors can explore Nagoya Castle, Atsuta Jingu, the Toyota Commemorative Museum, the Osu shopping district, Sakae, and distinctive local dishes such as miso katsu, hitsumabushi, and tebasaki. Nagoya is also the most convenient urban base for visiting Ghibli Park, which was one of the highlights of my trip,” Oleshkevich stated, also mentioning that hotel rates can be found for as little as $50 for a mid-range experience on a recent journey there.

He wasn’t alone in this endorsement of Japan, with Ritu Panesar – founder and president of Travelopod – also mentioning Japan more broadly as a current bargain, particularly due to the current weakness of the yen versus the U.S. dollar.

"Japan is the destination where the exchange rate did more for travelers than any deal or discount could. Clients should book while the yen still favors the dollar,” Panesar noted.

Juan Castells of Planet of Adventures recommended Tbilisi, Georgia, noting that travelers could expect base expenses of just $20 per day.

"It's an incredibly beautiful country, combining stunning nature with historical sites," Castells said.

Another gem of a country worth considering is Albania. Travel guru and wildlife photographer Johan Siggesson highlighted affordable outside activities and opportunities.

"Albania is a diamond in the rough for budget travel. A country filled with hiking and sites to ruin plus fishing, beaches, and food all for an approximate $60 to $100 cost per day,” Siggesson said.
