3 Summer Side Hustles That Can Bring In $1K+ Per Month

Summer living may be easy for other people, but you want to make money. An extra $1,000 or so a month would help you make a dent in your bills and make meaningful progress toward your financial goals. You know you need a seasonal side hustle. But are there any that could realistically let you earn about $1,000 a month?

Surprisingly, yes. When MoneyLion talked to Roxana Colorado, CEO of Kandula International, she had some suggestions that have the potential to help you earn a significant amount of money in a month — perhaps even walking away with a grand by month’s end.

Colorado advised people who want to make an extra $1,000 a month to do the math before they get attached to a particular idea.

“A lot of side hustles sound flexible until you add gas, supplies, platform fees, unpaid prep time, childcare, taxes, or the time it takes to actually find customers,” Colorado said. She added that she generally doesn’t recommend jumping into rideshare or delivery driving as a first summer side hustle.

You should also consider what you're actually earning per hour and how much you want to work.

“A $1,000 monthly goal is about $250 a week. If a gig nets $25 an hour, that is roughly 10 hours a week. If it nets $50 an hour, it is closer to five hours a week,” Colorado said. “That difference matters when someone is already working, parenting, studying or trying not to burn out.”

Are you a patient person by nature? Do you like working with older adults? If you answered yes to both questions and have basic competency with a computer or other electronics, you might be in demand among people who don’t want to explain to their parents how to log in to Zoom one more time.

Colorado said that many seniors and other adults who aren't tech-savvy could benefit from a kind soul helping them with everyday tasks such as using a smartphone, organizing passwords, joining Zoom calls, setting up email, using telehealth portals, managing online banking safely or even learning how to avoid obvious scams.

“Someone could charge $25 to $50 an hour, depending on the task and market. At $40 an hour, they would need about 25 paid hours a month to reach $1,000,” Colorado said. “To start, I'd keep it small. Make a short list of five things you can help with.”

Colorado was clear about one thing: Don't market yourself as a tech expert. You're not repairing anything; you're helping people learn everyday digital skills.

If you've got some pep in your step, you could be a good brand ambassador. Colorado said this role could be especially good for people who want flexible, on-demand schedules.

“Part-time brand ambassador work can often pay around $20 to $35 an hour. At $25 an hour, someone would need about 40 hours a month to make $1,000,” Colorado said. “That could be a few evening activations, weekend events or longer shifts during the month.”

To get started, Colorado suggested creating a simple profile with a clear photo and highlighting your customer service or sales experience. You can apply for roles through event staffing platforms, brand ambassador agencies, promotional marketing firms or on-demand work apps.

Colorado shared that small businesses always need help with tasks such as marketing newsletters, email cleanup, blog drafts, event flyers, social media, customer follow-up and basic research.

That's where you can come in.

“I would tell someone to create a simple summer support menu. For example, 'four newsletters,' 'two weeks of captions,' 'inbox cleanup,' 'event flyer and reminder emails,' or 'customer follow-up templates,'” Colorado said. “To start, choose three things you can do well, create a short service menu and reach out to small business owners who are already active but clearly stretched.”

Signs a business is stretched? Its social media hasn’t been updated recently, its website lists outdated events or its follow-up emails are inconsistent.

Colorado said that a realistic rate might be between $25 and $50 an hour. However, she prefers small packages because “business owners like knowing what they're buying.” Consider this: Two clients at $500 a month each can get you to that $1,000 goal.

Earning an extra $1,000 a month may take some hard work and flexibility, but with the right set of skills, it can be done. Some of these suggested side hustles have an added benefit — you can keep at them in the fall.
