How do we know? Well, Chris Pyle, auto expert at JustAnswer, made that clear immediately when asked. He shared that a 2010 Ford F-150 and a 2026 Ford F-150 perform essentially identically in snow. The vehicle's age has no bearing on its snow driving ability.

What matters is how the car is built, how it's equipped and, more than either of those, who's driving it.

Before getting into specific vehicle recommendations, Pyle laid out the framework buyers should understand.

Drivetrain is the starting point. Front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and 4x4 trucks and SUVs all handle snow significantly better than rear-wheel drive vehicles. Vehicles that send power only to the rear axle tend to struggle in snow and ice. If a used vehicle is rear-wheel drive, that’s the first thing to flag.

Wheelbase matters more than many buyers realize. Longer-wheelbase vehicles are generally more stable in snow and ice and less likely to spin out or lose control. Shorter-wheelbase vehicles are more reactive, which can be beneficial in ideal conditions but problematic in poor weather.

All Wheel Drive (AWD) and 4x4 systems also have limitations. Pyle was specific about this point.

In many AWD systems, power is directed to one front wheel and one rear wheel rather than all four wheels simultaneously. Trucks and larger SUVs with true 4x4 systems often include a rear limited-slip differential that sends power to both rear wheels, which can make a significant difference.

Either way, AWD and 4x4 do not help a vehicle stop faster or corner better in snow. They primarily improve traction when starting from a stop, climbing hills or getting unstuck.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is important when heading downhill. Modern anti-lock braking systems handle braking on snowy or icy roads better than the older technique of downshifting to slow a vehicle.

Pyle’s advice: You don’t need to gear down the way an older driver may have taught you. Use the brakes. ABS helps prevent wheel lockup and reduces the risk of sliding off the road.

Tires are the factor many people underestimate. Highway tires typically provide limited traction in snow. A more aggressive all-terrain tire — not necessarily a mud-terrain or studded tire, but one with a deeper tread pattern — can make a noticeable difference in real-world winter conditions, regardless of drivetrain.

A longer wheelbase, true 4x4 capability, rear limited-slip differentials and higher ground clearance make full-size trucks highly capable in heavy snow. Because many trucks depreciate significantly after the first owner, a well-maintained used example can offer strong value for snow-country drivers who need capability without paying new-truck prices.

These vehicles offer many of the same advantages as full-size trucks, including long wheelbases, 4x4 systems and substantial ground clearance. They also provide enclosed passenger space and cargo capacity. Well-maintained models from the past decade generally hold up well mechanically and perform consistently in snowy conditions.

Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system is widely regarded as one of the better all-wheel-drive setups available. Both the Outback and Forester offer enough ground clearance to handle significant snow accumulation. They also appear regularly on Pyle’s reliability recommendations, making them versatile used-vehicle choices regardless of climate.

The Toyota RAV4 combines a strong reliability reputation with available AWD and a wheelbase that feels stable in slippery conditions. Used RAV4s tend to hold their value well, which can mean paying more upfront. However, buyers often get a vehicle with a proven track record of reliability and relatively low maintenance costs.

The Honda CR-V offers many of the same advantages as the RAV4. Its AWD system activates automatically when wheel slip is detected, removing the need for driver input. That simplicity can make winter driving less intimidating for people who prefer not to manage drivetrain settings themselves.

Both vehicles offer legitimate AWD capability while typically experiencing greater depreciation than some competitors after several years of ownership. That can make them attractive values in the used market for buyers seeking winter capability at a lower price point.

Pyle’s most important point had little to do with the vehicle itself. The driver accounts for most snow-driving performance. A skilled driver can often navigate conditions in a front-wheel-drive sedan that an inexperienced driver would struggle with in a 4x4 truck.

Practice, understanding your vehicle’s limits and knowing how to respond when conditions deteriorate are often more valuable than any drivetrain upgrade.
