Discover Lidl's first store, 25 miles south of Frankfurt, which opened in 1973 with just three employees.

In February, Consumer Reports released a study that showed just how much of your monthly food budget is at stake when you choose which grocery store to stock up at. It found an average difference of 33% in savings between the cheapest and most expensive grocery stores.

Using Walmart as the baseline, the study concluded that Whole Foods, the most expensive food store chain in the U.S., charged 39.7% more per comparable basket of goods. On the other end of the spectrum were Costco and BJs, which are 21.4% and 21% cheaper, respectively. However, they’re wholesale membership clubs with paid subscriptions and bulk-purchasing discounts.

A more equivalent comparison was the No. 3 least-expensive chain in the country, Lidl. The following store-to-store showdown — using store brands wherever possible to keep things fair — shows how switching from Whole Foods to Lidl for just eight common groceries can save you almost $900 a year.
