Sam’s Club ‘Freebies’ Most Members Forget To Use (And That Save You $500 a Year)

A Sam’s Club membership can do more than help shoppers buy groceries in bulk.

From cheaper gas to free curbside pickup and overlooked rewards, many members miss perks that can lower everyday costs

With many drivers still paying more than $4 a gallon for gas, across the country, cheaper gas is one Sam’s Club perk that suddenly matters a lot more.

Members can access lower gas prices at Sam’s Club fuel stations, which are often cheaper than nearby stations.

According to Consumer Reports, warehouse clubs like Sam’s Club can charge anywhere from 5 to 25 cents less per gallon than competitors. For drivers filling up weekly, that could add up to more than $100 in annual savings.

A flat tire can turn into an expensive surprise fast.

Sam’s Club members who buy tires through the warehouse can get free flat tire repair, tread checks and battery testing at participating Sam’s Club Tire & Battery Centers.

According to Kelley Blue Book, tire repair can cost roughly $54 to $64 on average. Avoiding even one repair bill during the year could help offset part of the membership cost.

Driving to the store is one thing. Paying extra to have groceries dropped at the door is another. Sam’s Club members can skip those delivery charges by using Sam’s Club Curbside Pickup for online orders.

NBC News also found that pickup orders generally carried the same grocery prices as shopping in store, without the extra fees tied to delivery services.

Eating out keeps getting more expensive. According to the latest consumer price index, food away from home rose 3.6% over the past year.

Through Sam’s Club Gift Cards, members can often buy $50 restaurant gift cards for closer to $40. Saving about $10 a month on dining could add up to roughly $120 over a year.

This is one of those perks many shoppers forget they even turned on.

Sam’s Club Plus members can earn 2% back in Sam’s Cash on qualifying purchases and curbside pickup orders, then use those rewards on future shopping trips.

That may not sound huge at first. But for a household spending about $400 a month at Sam’s Club, those rewards could add up to roughly $96 back over the course of a year.

Not every Sam’s Club order needs to turn into a store run. Sam’s Club Plus members get free shipping on eligible online orders over $50, which can come in handy for bulky household items, paper products and online-only deals.

Orders under $50 now carry an $8 shipping fee for Plus members, according to Sam’s Club. That means using the perk just twice a month on qualifying orders could save shoppers close to $200 a year in shipping costs.

A Sam’s Club membership can feel expensive if shoppers only use it for bulk groceries. But perks like cheaper gas, discounted restaurant gift cards, Sam’s Cash rewards and free member services can offset part of the annual fee over time.

For members trying to cut everyday spending, the bigger takeaway may be this: Some of the best savings are already included in the membership. They just have to be used consistently.
