5 Reliable Cars That Beat Enthusiast Vehicles, According to Doug DeMuro

Cars that are valued for their driving experience, engineering, styling or sentimental worth rather than their utility are sometimes called enthusiast cars. With an emphasis on engagement, feel and character, they frequently have customizable platforms or high-performance manual transmissions.
They also often have reliability concerns. That’s the opinion of enthusiastic automotive expert and entrepreneur Doug DeMuro, whose popular YouTube channel has 5.07 million equally enthusiastic subscribers.
In a recent YouTube video posted on his channel, DeMuro talked about reliable alternatives to some of the most beloved enthusiast cars, starting with two BMWs.

1. BMW F80 M3
DeMuro’s Alternatives: Cadillac ATS-V sedan/CT4-V Blackwing
The first of DeMuro’s BMW marks is the M3, particularly the F80 M3. Although he acknowledges Lexus’ answer to the M3, the IS F, as the natural alternative, DeMuro shifts gears and signals two Cadillac models that you should be looking at instead of this M3, both of which he described as “pretty damn dynamically impressive cars.”
DeMuro believes most drivers would prefer either underappreciated Caddy if they had the chance to drive them back-to-back with the M3. However, according to HotCars, a used ATS-V is an “underrated sleeper model” that you will be able to buy for less than a brand-new Toyota Camry.
2. BMW X5 M
DeMuro’s Alternative: Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT
The BMW X5 — “one of the best luxury SUVs we’ve ever tested,” wrote Consumer Reports — is still going strong in 2026. Although its current sticker price is very expensive ($132,450), is DeMuro really recommending a Jeep over a BMW for reliability? Apparently so.
We have to remember that DeMuro is targeting cars that are often priced higher than they should be. Used SRTs have more cabin and interior space, are equipped with powerful 6.4 Hemi V8 engines and are absolutely more reliable than the X5 M, according to DeMuro.
3. Mercedes-Benz SL
DeMuro’s Alternative: Lexus LC500
This one’s not much of a stretch, as Lexus makes many superb models, among them the LC500. Car and Driver agreed, writing, “The Lexus LC is a piece of vehicular art that appeals to the senses with elegant styling outside and in, a luxurious cabin and a lusty V-8 soundtrack.”
Likewise, DeMuro fawns over the LC500. Despite admitting that the Mercedes SL is the more comfortable ride, he said the Lexus LC500 feels higher quality.
“Lexus just did a better job of creating a spry athletic car in this size segment, in this luxury cruiser world,” said DeMuro.
4. Ferrari 348, Lamborghini Gallardo
DeMuro’s Alternative: Aston Martin Vantage
Many of the models DeMuro mentions in his video are high-performance machines, including these two roadsters from two legendary brands. Aston Martin doesn’t exactly have the greatest reputation for reliability, but DeMuro sticks up for the Vantage.
“The V8 Vantage and V12 Vantage are really cool cars,” he said. “And the real secret to those cars, they're reliable.”
“The V8 Vantage is perfect for anyone who wants a luxury sports car with an elegant body, throaty exhaust sound and a proper sports car experience,” HotCars wrote.
5. Porsche Boxster/Cayman
DeMuro’s Alternative: Honda S2000
DeMuro admitted that these Porsches aren’t unreliable, but these cars still intimidate buyers with the price of their maintenance, parts and service. However, Honda’s S2000 is a hall of famer that is not only reliable and cheaper, but fun to drive.
“The S2000 does not have the Porsche brand name, but other than that, it is sublime,” said Demuro.
