Is Paramount+ Worth the Cost or Should You Save Your Money?

Marcus Sturdivant Sr., managing member of The ABC Squared, is like millions of Americans who have cut the cord when it comes to television subscriptions. One of the most common reasons is that the costs can quickly get out of hand even before you realize how much is coming out of the budget.

“We cut the cord maybe a decade ago,” he said. “The costs just got ridiculous. The subscriptions kept adding up.”

If you’re considering whether Paramount+ is a good option for your household, read on to see what some financial pros told MoneyLion are good factors to consider.

If you go directly to the Paramount+ website, you’ll see a few options for subscriptions. If you want to go the monthly route, there are $8.99 and $13.99 options. You may also be able to save money with yearly plan options.

If you want a free trial, it may not be easy to find. However, Walmart and some other content platforms have offered ways to try Paramount+ for free.

Brandon Gregg, certified financial planner (CFP) and advisor with BBK Wealth Management, told MoneyLion his family has used Paramount+ off and on over the years. He added there are some clear benefits that may be worth the money.

“If you are into sports, especially the NFL, it provides a lot of CBS programming,” he said. “It provides a fair amount of TV and movie options, but it may slightly lag behind some competitors regarding a vast movie library.”

In Gregg’s experience, he said Paramount + has been on the cheaper side of most streaming subscriptions, which is helpful if you’re on a tighter budget.

“We've found that we rotate services, and Paramount + is affordable for shorter viewing periods, especially when we use it only to stream specific shows that we like and then cancel,” he added. “It's easy to stop and start the subscription as needed.”

Like with any other entertainment subscription, per Taylor Kovar, CFP and co-founder of UseKlear.com, the answer of whether Paramount+ is worth the cost probably comes down to how much you’re actually using it. He said that’s a part people can miss.

“It's easy to keep paying out of habit long after the shows that got you there have wrapped up,” he noted. “A lot of people are juggling several of these subscriptions now, and the cost can add up more than expected.”

Several money experts said a smart way to decide if you should have Paramount+ is to do a simple audit. You can review all your subscriptions and see if there are any you can cut. If you’re doing this as part of your routine budgeting, you can go well beyond just entertainment costs.

“What I'd usually suggest is doing a quick subscription check every few months, not just streaming but anything on autopay,” Kovar said. “Canceling what isn't getting much use, or rotating services instead of paying for all of them year-round, can be a fairly simple way to free up some money.”
