I Asked a Nutritionist for the Most Delicious Aldi Grocery Picks (for Under $20)

Being healthy doesn’t mean spending more or sacrificing taste. You can eat tasty, healthy food on a budget, especially when shopping at discount grocery stores like Aldi.

According to Aldi, one in three households shopped at Aldi this past year. The grocer also has the lowest prices of any other national grocery store and plans to expand both its store footprint and online presence in the U.S.

Dr. Maria Knöbel, GMC-registered GP and medical director of Medical Cert, put frozen berries at the top of the list. According to Dr. Knöbel, Aldi’s frozen blueberries and raspberries have the same nutrient value as fresh ones because they’re frozen at peak ripeness, not picked early and shipped long distances.

“Nutritionally, they're packed with anthocyanins, which are antioxidants responsible for the color of berries and for combating inflammation in the body,” Dr. Knöbel explained.

They’re also cheaper than fresh berries and can be stored for months in the freezer.

Both Dr. Knöbel and Rena Awada, certified nutrition coach and founder of Healthy Fitness Meals, recommended plain Greek yogurt. “Plain Greek yogurt is one of my favorite affordable grocery purchases,” Awada explained. “It provides protein and calcium in a very versatile, budget-friendly package.”

But when shopping, she advised avoiding added sugar and controlling how much sugar you add.

You can also flavor them however you like. “Mine, I add frozen berries and drizzle it with a teaspoon of honey,” Dr. Knöbel added. “If you are sugar conscious but still want to add a hint of sweetness, I recommend putting stevia extract drops or monk fruit sugar.”

  • Price: $12.35

Dr. Knöbel recommended Aldi’s Specially Selected olive oil, pointing out that it won the "Which? Best Value Award" and beat out pricier brands in quality and flavor.

“Extra virgin olive oil is high in monounsaturated fats and polyphenols, which have been associated with reduced inflammation and improved markers for heart health,” she explained.

According to Awada, canned chickpeas are an easy way to add fiber and plant-based protein to your diet.

“Add some chickpeas to salads, soups, wraps, grain bowls or pasta for added texture and satiety,” she recommended. You can also mash with seasonings for a sandwich filling, blend into homemade hummus or toss in the oven on high heat and roast until crispy.

“While chickpeas have relatively little sodium compared to many other convenience foods, you can still lower their sodium by rinsing and draining them after opening,” she added.
