1. Maserati GranTurismo
A Maserati is synonymous with the upper echelon of car ownership, but Gelfand said that you’ll lose your riches trying to repair this vehicle.
“The prices of the used cars have dropped significantly for the Maserati GranTurismo and as the purchase price has gone down the repair costs of this car have still not gone down," Gelfand explained. "And when you are dealing with an exotic car like the Maserati the parts can be very expensive for the car and there are not a lot of service centers around that can even service the car.”
2. Nissan GT-R
Nissan’s GT-R is known for its impressive horsepower, but Gelfand said that won’t matter much next to all the other problems the vehicle will cause — especially if you buy it used.
“High performing cars like this always have expensive items like tires and brakes. The transmission and drivetrain must be serviced regularly to prevent damage," he added. "Also many GT-Rs are modified in some way and have been launched excessively which can cause problems for the next owner.”
3. Porsche 911 Turbo
Though the 911 is known for being one of the best built cars, if you’re buying it used, you’re going to run into problems. Because of the advanced architecture of these parts, they’re costly to fix.
"The reality is that the cost of parts and particularly the labor to fit these parts, as well as tire and brake costs and the specialized service costs required for these cars can be absolutely shocking when something major goes wrong,” Gelfand said.
4. Chevrolet Corvette Z06
Once again, Gelfand cited that Z06’s parts can take a huge toll on your wallet if they break down: “Even with high performance price points for these vehicles, the higher performance means higher wear and in most cases, increased maintenance. Used tires and brake systems can be very expensive, cooling system failures are often the result of very hard driving and many of these have been track toys so be sure to have a very thorough inspection done and obtain proof of proper maintenance.”
5. BMW M5 and M6 With the BMW S85 V10
When buying a used sports car, Gelfand said that you have to assume they’ve been driven very aggressively by previous owners. That’s going to end up costing you in the long run.
“They are very computerized so there is a lot that can go wrong. And, of course, their expensive drivetrain parts have a high cost of repair," he added. "These engines are infamous for having issues with their rod bearings, an extremely important engine component. Lack of perfect maintenance or even preventative replacement of these rod bearings could lead to a seized engine.”
