5 Kid-Friendly Side Hustles With Real Earning Potential

Summer break is in full swing. For parents, that means one thing -- figuring out how to keep your kids occupied. So, why not spend some quality time together while teaching your children the value of a dollar?
Here are a few fun activities you can do alongside your kids this summer that just so happen to double as money-making opportunities.

Find Out: 9 Unusual Ways To Make Extra Money (That Actually Work)
1. Selling Forgotten Jewelry
Most households have jewelry laying around that no one wears anymore. Instead of letting these expensive items collect dust, Barry Schneider, co-founder at Cash for Gold USA, suggested parents turn finding this jewelry into a fun treasure hunt.
Once compiled, the pieces can be sold for cash. Plenty of companies are looking to buy your forgotten gold, silver and diamonds.
Per Schneider, households typically have an average of $200 to $1,500 worth of unused gold just sitting in drawers — and “broken does not equal worthless.” Kids can help locate and sort forgotten gold and silver items, and then learn to identify metal stamps like 10k, 14k and 18k.
2. Tutoring Younger Children
Having your child tutor younger children in the neighborhood can be a great team-building exercise for both you and your kid, said Yad Senapathy, founder and CEO of Project Management Training Institute.
Your child can then help other young ones improve their math and reading skills while you communicate with their parents, exchange money and set up appointments. Parents bring credibility to this side hustle while older children bring comfort, fun and a “cool factor” to the young students they tutor.
3. Shooting and Selling Stock Photos
Shooting and selling stock photos can be a great way to spend time with your child while exploring the neighborhood. Per Mendy Perlman, SEO and web hosting expert at Web Hosting Services, all you need is a quality camera phone.
From there, upload them to Shutterstock (you earn 25 cents to 38 cents per download), Adobe Stock (you earn 33 cents per download) and Alamy (you earn 5% commission per sale). Perlman stated that, on good months, contributors can earn $300 to $1,500 passively.
For better sales, aim to shoot images that are in short supply on these platforms.
4. Reselling Thrifted Items
Take your kids to second-hand markets, purchase thrifted items and resell them online, said Peter Baranik, founder and publisher at ColorWee. As a general rule, he suggested finding items under $3 that you think you can resell for more than $6.
“Clothes, toys, small electronics and books move fast on local marketplace apps,” Baranik said.
Kids can pick out the items, take photos and help write product descriptions while parents can upload the items. Last year, Baranik and his son made over $200 in eight weekends.
5. Setting Up a Shaved Ice Stand
Everyone craves cold treats during the summer months. This is why the founder of Side Hustle Nation, Nick Loper, recommended kids and parents set up a shaved ice stand near their community pool. After all, when it comes to a fruitful summer side gig, it's all about location, location, location.
Parents can supervise (and front the money for the machine) while kids make signs, market their product, collect money and custom-make orders. You can likely pull in $50 to $100 over a couple hours.
