I Asked ChatGPT To Plan Our Family Vacation Budget — Here's How We're Saving $2K

Going on vacation is a lot more fun than planning your vacation. Spending hours scrolling on social media for vacation ideas and using travel search engines for affordable suggestions isn’t easy. That’s why I decided to simplify the early stages of planning by turning to ChatGPT.

I asked the AI to help plan a family vacation that would help me save roughly $2,000 compared with the typical costs of a summer excursion. Not wanting to make it too easy on ChatGPT, I added a big caveat: I don’t do camping, so the AI had one relatively inexpensive idea taken off the table.

Here’s what the AI said.

Instead of giving me a specific travel plan with a destination picked out, the AI gave me a broad sense of what I should be spending across several major categories. Now, if I wanted more detailed instructions, I’d have to revise my prompt. But I liked the freedom to use ChatGPT’s advice as scaffolding for my own ideas.

“If the goal is to save roughly $2,000 compared with a typical family summer vacation, the biggest wins usually come from where you stay, when you travel and how you handle food and entertainment,” ChatGPT wrote.

After suggesting a four-night stay in a drivable location within several hours of home, the AI broke down what I should plan to spend in major categories:

  • Vacation rental with kitchen: $700

  • Gas: $100

  • Groceries and two restaurant meals: $250

  • Local attractions: $300

  • Miscellaneous: $150

The total cost of this vacation is about $1,500. Based on its findings about the typical cost of a family vacation — which it said involved a family of four spending five nights at a major beach destination — ChatGPT projected that my estimated savings would be about $2,700.

I quite liked the freedom and flexibility ChatGPT’s suggestions offered. That said, I still wanted some more detailed ideas about how I could plan a cost-effective vacation, so I asked the AI for some savings strategies.

ChatGPT cautioned that although many families immediately look at flights, “transportation is often the largest vacation expense.” The AI offered some common-sense swaps to cut transportation costs.

Instead of flying to a major tourist destination, ChatGPT suggested I try:

  • A nearby lake town

  • A smaller beach community

  • A historic city within driving distance

  • A family-friendly resort town reachable in one tank of gas

According to ChatGPT, a road trip can easily save:

  • $1,000 to $1,500 on airfare

  • $300 to $500 on rental cars

Fortunately, finding these kinds of locations isn’t hard from where I live. If I were in a smaller town without these options, I’d definitely need more specificity in the AI’s responses.

ChatGPT proclaimed that “this is often the easiest vacation savings win.” Instead of eating three restaurant meals every day, the AI said I should try:

  • Breakfast at the rental

  • Packing lunches for outings

  • One restaurant dinner per day

The AI indicated that I could potentially save hundreds of dollars by cooking more meals at “home.”

ChatGPT informed me that hotels and vacation rentals frequently cost less on weekdays. By staying on "off" days, I could see the following potential savings:

  • 15% to 30% on lodging

  • Easier attraction reservations

  • Less crowded destinations

The AI said that on a $1,000 lodging bill, that often means saving between $150 and $300.

Anyone who’s ever taken a family to a theme park or other attraction knows you can all too easily spend hundreds on admission tickets. To cut costs, the AI recommended that I mix in:

  • Beaches

  • State parks

  • Walking tours

  • Splash pads

  • Public concerts

  • Community festivals

  • Museum free days

By taking its advice, the AI said I could potentially save $200 to $500.

ChatGPT said that one of the smartest strategies I can employ is setting up a daily vacation budget in a few core categories:

  • Dining budget

  • Souvenir budget

  • Activity budget

“This approach still delivers a genuine summer getaway — comfortable lodging, activities and family time — while avoiding camping and cutting vacation costs by roughly $2,000 or more compared with a typical flight-and-hotel vacation,” ChatGPT said.

If I wanted ChatGPT to deliver a more detailed itinerary, I’d be disappointed with these results. And, given that AI isn’t perfect, I’d still likely turn to a travel expert for a fully planned trip.

But I really enjoyed this looser approach and the helpful, flexible strategies that made planning feel far less overwhelming.
