Not to worry – we tapped some experts to find out what some of the best deals at Home Depot are that you can get to cool your home effectively and efficiently while costing less than $50.
Door Sweep
Price: $10.43
According to Dean Mahmoud, the CEO of EcoGen America, the gap between exterior door bottoms and the floor, left unsealed, allows hot outside air to continually enter the home.
“Honestly, the first recommendation I give a homeowner to help with their cooling costs is to install a door sweep,” Mahmoud said, suggesting Home Depot’s bronze premium aluminum and vinyl door sweep. “The door sweep is easy to install, will require only basic tools and will seal the gap in less than 10 minutes.”
Insulating Sheathing
Price: $20.73
The insulating sheathing from Home Depot is an easy and frugal way to keep your cool this summer, even in rooms you might not visit that often.
“The attic often becomes the hottest part of the house because of the roof that absorbs the heat all day, and that heat radiates downward into the attic and then into the living space below, increasing the temperature upstairs,” said Bob Cardwell, owner of Cardwell HVAC and Plumbing.
Cardwell noted that self-adhesive weatherstripping and a piece of rigid foam you can both buy at Home Depot can “drastically reduce the heat gain and prevent the attic heat from leaking into the living space through gaps around the hatch."
Window Film
Price: $44.98
Mahmoud highlighted that the two most difficult rooms in a house to cool are usually those that face south or west.
“Untreated windows account for the majority of heat entering a home,” Mahmoud said.
By applying the Gila heat control titanium window film from Home Depot to the outside of the window before the sunlight enters the room, Mahmoud estimated homeowners will also be protecting flooring and furniture from UV damage and eliminating up to about 50% of the amount of heat entering into a house.
Box Fan
Price: $19.98
Cardwell pointed out that a 20-inch box fan is one of the most budget-friendly choices for less than $25 because “it's big enough to cool all people in the entire room and can be put in the window to pull cool air in when the outdoor temperatures are lower.”
Home Depot currently has the air circulating box fan for home on sale for just under $25.
