Elon Musk Promises a SpaceX Share To Every American Child in 2027

Elon Musk’s habit of making bold claims continues, even as 2026 winds down.

The billionaire founder of aerospace manufacturer SpaceX has announced that he plans to give every American child a share of the company in 2027, a pledge that could reach roughly 72 million young people. Per CNBC, at October share prices, the giveaway would be worth approximately $10.5 billion in total.

Musk has not yet explained how exactly the shares would be distributed, though he has indicated they would go through Trump accounts, the government program designed to establish investment accounts for children.

MoneyLion breaks down what Musk's promise entails and whether it's worth consideration.

Musk announced the plan in an October 19 post on X, bluntly stating that, “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” before calling the plan “the first of many.”

CNBC has reported that Musk owns about 4.8 billion SpaceX shares; the 72 million shares would come directly from his personal stake of 4.8 billion. CNBC sought further details from SpaceX and Musk’s family office without reply.

When asked on X whether the shares would be distributed to Trump accounts, Musk replied, “Yes.” President Trump and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have also indicated that shares would go into the Trump accounts, per Yahoo Finance.

For context, Trump accounts are tax-advantaged investment accounts for children born from 2025 to 2028. Those eligible children can receive a $1,000 federal contribution, and families can add money of their own. Musk’s proposed gift would be separate from that government contribution.

At the current share price recently cited by CNBC, one share would initially be worth about $146 on paper. Now, that value could rise or fall with SpaceX’s share price and the value when the stock can be sold. A quoted price does not mean a child would have cash to spend immediately.

Right now, until an active plan is explained and the shares are released, parents can review Trump account rules and check whether their child qualifies for the federal contribution, but it would be a bit premature to make plans around the promised stock before details are confirmed.

Previously, Musk has pledged up to $1 billion to OpenAI but eventually only gave about $38 million; he also failed to make a promised donation of $6 billion to the United Nations World Food Program after it presented a plan for addressing world hunger. These prior episodes are not presented to imply that Musk won’t follow through with his SpaceX share donations; they do indicate, though, that it’s worth remembering a public pledge is not the same thing as a completed gift.

If Musk follows through with this pledge, such a giveaway could provide millions of children with an early stake in a very high-profile company. However, its eventual benefit will depend on whether the shares are transferred and SpaceX’s future market performance.
