Claude Compares Airbnb vs. Hotel Costs for 3 Summer Destinations

Generative AI can be extremely helpful when planning a vacation. Claude’s ability to search the web makes it especially useful for pricing hotels and comparing options. MoneyLion did just that to find out whether you can really save money with an Airbnb when traveling with a group.

MoneyLion compared multiple lodging options at various price points — midrange, boutique and luxury hotels — along with affordable, midrange and luxury short-term rentals across different trip lengths.

In all but the luxury category, booking two hotel rooms with two queen beds each was cheaper than an equivalent Airbnb for this trip.

The Beachside at Nantucket, a midrange hotel, came in at the lowest price at about $1,225 per person for seven nights. It’s within half a mile of attractions and close to the ferry and beach, offering resort-style amenities, an outdoor pool and free breakfast. For roughly $1,825 per person, each traveler could get their own bedroom in an affordable Airbnb with an on-site hot tub and fire pit.

Nantucket’s White Elephant Hotel, located on the harbor, blends a prime location with complimentary bicycles, a poolside bar and top-tier service. It costs about $1,600 per night, or $5,600 per person for the trip. A comparable four-bedroom waterfront home would cost about $5,000 per person.

“The only option where everyone gets their own room and their own bed, without sharing a room, is the STRs. Every hotel configuration here still has two women per room,” Claude said.

However, when the group size increased to eight travelers, pricing shifted significantly in favor of Airbnbs across every category. Only the high-end Airbnb — still cheaper than the luxury hotel — gave each traveler their own room.

Unlike Nantucket, Airbnbs in Healdsburg were the more affordable option in every category. The most affordable short-term rental — a two-bedroom cottage about two miles from Healdsburg Square — would cost about $825 per person.

The Harmon Guest House, a hotel offering private king rooms, runs about $1,225 per person but benefits from a central location and a rooftop bar.

The luxury Montage Healdsburg costs about $3,990 per person for two private king rooms.

Meanwhile, a high-end private villa — offering suite-level rooms for each couple, a pool, hot tub, vineyard views and optional private tastings — costs about $3,750 per person, again making the STR the lower-cost option.

Claude’s notes: “The mid-range STR is the standout value for this group. Two couples in a vineyard cottage with a hot tub, private yard, and full kitchen — at a lower per-person cost than Hotel Healdsburg — is a genuinely compelling alternative."

  • Type of Trip: Theme-park vacation for a family of five, with kids ages 3, 6 and 8

  • Dates: Aug. 11–16, 2026

When traveling as a family, finding hotel rooms large enough to accommodate multiple children without booking additional rooms can increase costs and complicate logistics. “The STR advantage grows with family size,” Claude noted.

We also saw this dynamic when we doubled the size of our Nantucket group. For this comparison, we looked at total trip costs, since this is a family vacation and the children are not contributing to expenses. For hotels, resorts and vacation rentals near Disney and Universal — but not located on the parks’ properties — hotels tended to be cheaper by several hundred to more than $1,000.

The Caribe Royale Orlando, located just over 2 miles from Walt Disney World, offers a queen suite for $1,964 or a two-bedroom villa for $2,964. The villa includes a full kitchen, a washer and dryer, and a private bedroom with an en suite bath for parents, offering amenities comparable to an Airbnb for about $1,000 less.

Airbnbs often provide the most value for larger groups of adults, splitting costs and wanting shared living space rather than separate hotel rooms. However, the better option can vary by location. If you’re open to either, it’s worth comparing prices carefully and factoring in all fees, along with hotel perks such as free breakfast, before making a final decision.
