Tutoring
Tutoring is a solid side gig option because you can take a subject you already know about and turn it into recurring weekly income according to Lauren Mastroni, career expert with Resume Genius.
“Upwork currently lists tutors at roughly $20 to $40 an hour, meaning that earning $5,000 would require between 125 to 250 hours total, or between five to 10 hours per week for six months,” Mastroni said.
Mastroni pointed out that the biggest advantage to tutoring is repeat business: “One student who books a weekly session can provide a predictable stream of income rather than requiring you to find new clients on a per project basis.”
Furnished Monthly Rentals
Jeff Hurst, CEO of Furnished Finder, highlighted how homeowners can earn side income by renting out their existing, unused space — like a spare bedroom, basement apartment, guest house or an entire property — to traveling professionals and others seeking stays of 30 days or more.
“Depending on the market and property type, hosts can earn hundreds to thousands of dollars per month, making it one of the more attainable paths to reaching a $5,000 earnings goal within six months,” Hurst explained, citing the stats at Furnished Finder, which finds the average landlord earns approximately $15,000 annually.
Car Detailing
You might enjoy automobiles, yet don’t have what it takes to do mechanical repairs or easy fix-it jobs. However, you can clean and detail them for a pretty penny per Side Hustle Nation, which found that rates usually fall between $200 to $400 for each car.
If you can plan out two or three detailing jobs on one of your off days, budgeting about an hour to 90 minutes per car, there’s the potential to hit the $5,000 mark in less than six months.
Pet Care
“Rates vary substantially by location, but 30-minute walks commonly run around $16 to $25 according to Rover’s data, while pet sitting overnight averages roughly $45 to $75 per night,” Mastroni explained, adding that the math is more demanding than freelance professional services, but it's still doable.
As an example, Mastroni detailed how earning an average of $25 per visit would require 200 visits over six months or about eight visits per week, to gross $5,000. “Someone who combines dog walking with overnight sitting could reach the goal with fewer individual bookings,” Mastroni added.
