I Asked ChatGPT To Build a $500 a Month Passive Income Stream — Here's the Exact Plan It Gave Me

According to a new UBS Global Wealth Report, 440,000 new millionaires were created last year in the United States.
If you want to build wealth, you’ll need to focus on generating passive income and growing your portfolio. This is why we prompted ChatGPT to provide a step-by-step plan to build a $500 monthly passive income stream. We then had a real financial advisor review the feasibility of such a plan. ChatGPT’s Passive Income Plan
Prompt: How can someone build a $500-per-month passive income stream? What's the exact step-by-step plan?
“If someone starts with little or no existing passive income, the fastest path usually isn't investing — it's creating or acquiring an asset that generates recurring revenue,” the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot said.
ChatGPT recommended building a digital product that can continue earning with minimal ongoing work once built.
Below are the exact steps to get started.
1. Choose One Problem
“Focus on a narrow, specific problem that people actively want to solve.” ChatGPT suggested looking into topics like budgeting, meal planning, resume writing, home-buying checklists and so on.
2. Create a Simple Product
“Create something that saves people time or helps them achieve a result,” the chatbot said

3. Sell it
“Use a simple platform such as Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy, Etsy (for digital downloads) or your own website. $19 to $49 works well for many first products,” ChatGPT said.
4. Create Free Content
ChatGPT recommended that you publish consistently where your audience already spends time. Common platforms include TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts and LinkedIn. You can show a common mistake and then mention your product.
5. Build an Email List
The next step is to offer a free resource related to your paid product so that you can collect email addresses so you can continue reaching interested people without relying only on social media algorithms.
6. Improve Based on Feedback
The final step is to improve your product based on feedback, as higher conversion can increase income without requiring more traffic.
If you sell a $25 product, you can make $500 per month with 20 sales. At a $50 price point, that’s only 10 sales per month.
ChatGPT emphasized that those targets are often more achievable than trying to attract hundreds of thousands of views.
The AI-generated plan had the following conclusion.
“The most successful passive income streams usually start as active work that creates a long-lived asset. Whether it's a digital product, a library of videos or an investment portfolio, the goal is to build something that can continue generating value — and income — long after the initial effort is complete.”
How Feasible Is This Passive Income Plan?
Jacob Bayer, certified financial planner (CFP) and founder of Jacob Bayer Wealth Management, shared the following insights on this passive income plan.
The Framework Makes Sense for a Digital Business
Bayer acknowledged that this is a solid framework for a digital business since the steps provide a realistic picture of what it takes to launch a digital product, from identifying the problem to building an email list.
The Plan Isn’t Exactly Passive
The biggest problem is mislabeling the steps as passive income, according to Bayer. “The very reason it’s a side business and not passive income is because of all the ongoing work for it,” he added.
There Are No Guarantees With Conversions
A sales funnel converts 1% to 3% of engaged users, per Bayer. This means that if you want to achieve 20 sales per month, you have to reach thousands of engaged users months. The biggest hurdle here is that you have to publish content that goes viral, since there are no guarantees that consistent content will gain traction.
ChatGPT Ignores Important Financial Considerations
Bayer pointed out that ChatGPT ignores crucial financial considerations. For example, you could end up having a month with $0 income and you’re also ignoring self-employment taxes that you would owe every quarter.
Plan Can Create False Expectations
Bayer believes that this plan is only feasible for a very small minority of people who can remain persistent for at least six to 12 months in building out a digital product. You also have to factor in opportunity cost since there are more reliable options like maxing out your retirement contributions or increasing your billable hours than engaging in 12 weeks of unpaid work with uncertain outcomes.
He concluded, “The plan itself is not the issue; the problem is the expectations it sets.”
