$1K in Ethereum Today: What It Could Be Worth by 2030, According to Analysts

The value of Ethereum has risen and fallen over the years, but one bank believes it could be worth substantially more in the future. As reported by Coindesk, Standard Chartered predicts Ethereum could reach $40,000 by the end of 2030.
For someone investing $1,000, that forecast would mean a return much larger than the same investment in bitcoin or an S&P 500 index fund. Here’s how it all shakes out.

What $1K in Ethereum Could Be Worth
With Ethereum priced at $1,818.86, per Robinhood, a $1,000 investment would buy around 0.5498 ETH before trading fees.
If Ethereum does reach $40,000, that same $1,000 investment would be worth $21,992, with a profit of approximately $20,992 before fees and taxes.
That figure sounds impressive, but Ethereum’s price would have to increase dramatically, by 2,099%, to reach $40,000.
What $1K in Bitcoin Could Be Worth
With bitcoin's cost at $63,140.57, according to Robinhood, $1,000 would buy around 0.01584 bitcoin before fees.
ARK Invest’s base forecast puts Bit]bcoin at $710,000 in 2030. If that prediction holds true, the $1,000 investment would grow to $11,245.
That's a significant return, but it's only slightly more than half of the amount produced by Standard Chartered’s Ethereum forecast.
ARK also called its bitcoin forecast speculative. Demand could grow more slowly than expected or investors could lose interest before 2030.
How an S&P 500 Index Fund Compares
Since it began in 1957, the S&P 500 has delivered an average annual return of about 10%, per Fidelity. At that rate, $1,000 invested would be worth about $1,530 by December 2030.
A $530 gain is much smaller than either crypto forecast. Additionally, the 10% figure is based on decades of stock market results. It's not a prediction that the market will return exactly 10% during the next 4.5 years.
Will Ethereum Reach $40K by 2030?
It depends. Standard Chartered’s prediction assumes that Ethereum will continue attracting investors. However, competing blockchain networks could lure some of those investors away and new laws, as reported by Latham & Watkins, could affect how people use and invest in cryptocurrency. Plus, digital asset prices can rise and fall quickly and investors could lose some or all of the money they put in, according to Fidelity.
Overall, a $1,000 investment would be worth $21,992 only if Ethereum reaches $40,000. If it stays close to the price referenced, a $1,000 investment would not result in anything close to that return.
